Here is the second issue of This Week in Lubuntu Development. You can read last week's issue [here](https://lubuntu.me/this-week-in-lubuntu-development-1/).
# Changes
## General
* We released 18.04 Final Beta this week. You can find the announcement [here](https://lubuntu.me/lubuntu-bionic-beaver-final-beta-has-been-released/).
* The [encrypted LVM bug](https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/partman-auto-crypto/+bug/1759732) we described last week has been fixed (thanks to [Steve Langasek](https://launchpad.net/~vorlon)!).
* We are still working hard to try to find what is causing [the other bug](https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1754174) that is causing Lubuntu to be uninstallable when selecting "Install Lubuntu" on the boot screen. For now, you can select "Try Lubuntu" and go to the installer from there, and it will work. **Please avoid filing duplicate bugs, but you can mark that bug as affecting you as well.**
* Since Lubuntu's seeds are different, we needed adjustments to the tooling to be able to support the minimal install option. Those changes have landed, and this option is now being utilized.
* [https://code.launchpad.net/~tsimonq2/livecd-rootfs/lubuntu-seed-mangling/+merge/342064](https://code.launchpad.net/~tsimonq2/livecd-rootfs/lubuntu-seed-mangling/+merge/342064)
* [https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/livecd-rootfs/2.517](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/livecd-rootfs/2.517)
* Thanks to [Iain Lane](https://launchpad.net/~laney)!
* This adds it to the seed: [https://github.com/lubuntu-team/lubuntu-seeds/commit/806639acd4f2c1720da06b9cde9a6af11013c07c](https://github.com/lubuntu-team/lubuntu-seeds/commit/806639acd4f2c1720da06b9cde9a6af11013c07c)
* A Stable Release Update was issued to users of Lubuntu 16.04 fixing some LXPanel issues after switching to a Right-to-Left language.

## Lubuntu Next
* Per the advice of the Ubuntu Technical Board, Lubuntu has adjusted the support length for Lubuntu Next to only be nine months, officially.
* [https://code.launchpad.net/~tsimonq2/ubuntu-archive-publishing/lubuntu-next-support-cycle-adjustment/+merge/342475](https://code.launchpad.net/~tsimonq2/ubuntu-archive-publishing/lubuntu-next-support-cycle-adjustment/+merge/342475)
* Thanks to [Steve Langasek](https://launchpad.net/~vorlon)!
## Infrastructure and Project Changes
I [proposed](https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-release/2018-April/004387.html) to the Ubuntu Release Team and other flavors (as well as the Desktop and Server teams) last night that we should discontinue the Alpha and Beta 1 milestones in favor of monthly coordinated testing of all ISOs we typically ship in a release. Feel free to let us know your thoughts as a comment below or on the mailing list if you have anything for us to consider.
# Roadmap
You can find the Bionic Beaver release schedule [here](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BionicBeaver/ReleaseSchedule). This week is Bionic's Kernel Freeze and Non-Language-Pack Translation Deadline.
In layman's terms, this means that as of Thursday at 21 UTC, 18.04's usage of Linux 4.15 is final, and if you want to help with translating any of the programs [listed on the wiki page](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NonLanguagePackTranslationDeadline), there are no guarantees that your translations will be included in the release (although they will certainly be included in the 18.10 release and on, so we encourage help in translating those applications regardless of the release status :) ).
In technical terms, this means that while the Linux kernel will still bump ABI (as is usual with kernel updates, unfortunately), it will not bump the patch version string. As for translations, a manual export might not be done from Rosetta past that date into the source packages (which would likely have to happen before Final Freeze).
Next week, the RC comes out, and Final Freeze is put into place. This means that only critical updates will go into the Lubuntu release, and whatever updates don't get spun into the ISOs will arrive via an update. From there, Lubuntu 18.04 will receive point releases like a normal LTS.
In terms of the LTS releases, there's nothing unusual in the roadmap. The tentative date for 16.04.5 is August 5th, 2018, and our support for 16.04 ends in April of 2019.
One point of clarification that should be made from last week is that Lubuntu Next will **not** ship as a release ISO for 18.04, but will stay as a daily ISO. The packages in the archive (so, the LXQt stack) will only be supported for nine months. See last week's newsletter for why that is.

# Changes
## General
Some work was done on [the Lubuntu Manual](https://manual.lubuntu.me/) by Lubuntu contributor Lyn Perrine. Here's what she has been working on:
* [Start page for Evince](https://github.com/lubuntu-team/lubuntu-manual/commit/320b11b3aa7c55f5c0b96259c5bd78184b3b423a).
* [Start docs for the Document Viewer](https://github.com/lubuntu-team/lubuntu-manual/pull/26).
* [Start work on the GNOME MPV documentation](https://github.com/lubuntu-team/lubuntu-manual/commit/2401e8423d2c96e715119bd787000b0d77509afd).
* [Index fixes](https://github.com/lubuntu-team/lubuntu-manual/pull/28).
We need your help with the Lubuntu Manual! Take a look at PROGRESS.md on our [GitHub](https://github.com/lubuntu-team/lubuntu-manual) or [Launchpad](https://code.launchpad.net/~lubuntu-wiki-docs/lubuntu-manual/+git/lubuntu-manual) repositories, or [contact us](https://lubuntu.me/links/) for ways to help there. Pull requests on GitHub or Merge Requests on Launchpad are always welcome!
Here are some general fixes which have landed for the Bionic Beaver this week:
* An upstream bugfix release for mpv (0.27.2) has been [merged from Debian](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mpv/0.27.2-1ubuntu1). Thanks to [James Cowgill](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mpv/0.27.2-1ubuntu1)!
* A metapackage update for lubuntu-meta [has been done](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lubuntu-meta/0.94). Here are the commits which correspond to this metapackage update:
* [Seed gdebi.](https://github.com/lubuntu-team/lubuntu-seeds/commit/8dcdac62b55b5b325b3290a27961c1862a75e65e)
* [Recommend ubuntu-report.](https://github.com/lubuntu-team/lubuntu-seeds/commit/cb0b37d32adbd117f046cdf59eb2e91b0ea0a0dc)
* This allows us to utilize the opt-out metrics collection that will help us make Lubuntu better. If you don't want to use this on your system, you have the ability to opt out during the installation process. **If you opt out during the installation process, NOTHING will be collected. We value users' privacy, and although this data is absolutely anonymous, if they do not wish to report it, they don't have to.**
* This change comes from Ubuntu, and is not a Lubuntu-specific addition.
* Here are some other seed updates which aren't reflected in the metapackages:
* [Add some additional language support.](https://github.com/lubuntu-team/lubuntu-seeds/commit/e052f7e028c5f3a1f053a6b12bb5e08dc0ab8d69)
* [Seed samba-common-bin explicitly to live-share, as a missed recommends of cifs-utils.](https://github.com/lubuntu-team/lubuntu-seeds/commit/4bc6b3ab5947e17bc0d81c9ef51782041d89002f) Thanks to [Adam Conrad](https://launchpad.net/~adconrad)!
* [Make sure the slideshow is installed...](https://github.com/lubuntu-team/lubuntu-seeds/commit/2516455666ad13c1fd8c99292d6de17eeb1686b1)
## Lubuntu Next
We have been busy landing the Qt 5.9.5 stack in the Bionic Beaver, which, as we're publishing this, has landed in the proposed pocket of 18.04.
We also worked on security updates for Calibre, which have been released to all users of [Trusty](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/calibre/1.25.0+dfsg-1ubuntu1.2), [Xenial](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/calibre/2.55.0+dfsg-1ubuntu0.2), and [Artful](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/calibre/3.7.0+dfsg-2ubuntu0.1). Huge thanks to the Ubuntu Security Team, specifically [Leonidas S. Barbosa](https://launchpad.net/~leosilvab) and [Marc Deslauriers](https://launchpad.net/~mdeslaur), for assisting in landing these updates!
Lastly, we helped to fix a race condition between sddm and logind in Bionic. This has been [released](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sddm/0.17.0-1ubuntu4) to users. Please also note that sddm now starts on tty1 rather than tty7 (as it always has) in Bionic.
## Infrastructure and Project Changes
We continued [to have discussions](https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-release/2018-April/004387.html) around reforming the milestone process in Ubuntu. We will let you know when something final has been decided.
# Roadmap
You can find the Bionic Beaver release schedule [here](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BionicBeaver/ReleaseSchedule). This week is Bionic's [Final Freeze](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FinalFreeze) and [Release Candidate](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReleaseCandidate) period. Additionally, Tuesday (typically) is the last day translations can get into the archive, as it's [Language Pack Translation Deadline](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LanguagePackTranslationDeadline).
This means that any upload into the Ubuntu Archive past Thursday needs thorough vetting to ensure that it breaks nothing within the release. This means a higher degree of stability for Bionic going forward, with any non-release-critical bugs being postponed to go in as [a Stable Release Update](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates).
This means that next week is release week for Lubuntu 18.04! :D
We need your help testing so we can release in a week from Thursday! Keep your eyes peeled for updates to [the ISO QA Tracker](http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/) with a milestone called "Bionic Final" and [let us know](https://lubuntu.me/links/) how things go. We are still aware of two bugs that need to be fixed ([non-Latin characters are improperly displayed on the alternate images](https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1754646), [Install Lubuntu fails with Permission Denied](https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1754174) (which needs help from people very familiar with that stack)) so please do not re-report these, but rather, if you have any additional notes that would help, please do comment on the bug reports, or just mark yourself as affected.

Pull requests on GitHub or Merge Requests on Launchpad are always welcome!
The two bugs we listed last week as release blockers for Lubuntu have been fixed:
* [Install Lubuntu fails with Permission Denied](https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1754174) has been fixed in a way which we can't describe other than it "disappeared." Please yell loudly if this reappears.
* [Non-Latin characters are improperly displayed on the alternate images](https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1754646) has also been fixed. Many thanks to [Colin Watson](https://launchpad.net/~cjwatson) and [Łukasz Zemczak](https://launchpad.net/~sil2100)!
## Lubuntu Next
Qt 5.9.5 landed in Bionic last week, with [automated tests](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ProposedMigration) passing very quickly!
Many thanks to [Dmitry Shachnev](https://launchpad.net/~mitya57) for helping a great deal with this update.
Some further updates to SDDM landed, which fix some more race conditions:
* [Now we start on VT1 we need to avoid collision with plymouth. So take the startup ordering recommended in the sddm.service comments, and currently in use by KDE Neon.](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sddm/0.17.0-1ubuntu5)
* [Apply the fix for the race between sddm and logind to our service template as this is what we install. Drop previous fix-logind-race.patch.](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sddm/0.17.0-1ubuntu6)
* [Always wait for plymouth quit to run before trying to start.](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sddm/0.17.0-1ubuntu7)
Many thanks to [Rik Mills](https://launchpad.net/~rikmills) for working on these updates!
## Infrastructure and Project Changes
The proposal regarding getting rid of the Alphas and Beta 1 has been [finalized and adopted](https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-release/2018-April/004434.html). Thanks to everyone for the discussion!
# Roadmap
You can find the Bionic Beaver release schedule [here](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BionicBeaver/ReleaseSchedule).
This is release week! Please help test the Bionic Beaver so we can release on Thursday. As Adam Conrad [said](https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-release/2018-April/004438.html) in his email, the ISOs will be regenerated one last time, with a fresh kernel and `lsb_release` (among other things) being changed to reflect the final release. But, to quote Adam:
## DO NOT DELAY, TEST NOW, FIX BUGS, FILE BUGS, ESCALATE FOR HELP.
Please do [let us know](https://lubuntu.me/links/) if you come across any issues.

The **Cosmic Cuttlefish** is now [open for development](https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/lubuntu-devel/2018-May/001173.html) so the Lubuntu team has been hard at work syncing and merging things from Debian, and starting work on bugfixes. Here's what we have done in the Cosmic cycle this far:
* [Synced](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxqt-l10n/0.12.0-5) a new version of lxqt-l10n from Debian which includes some packaging updates.
* [Synced](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/transmission/2.94-1) a new upstream version of Transmission, 2.94, from Debian. Thanks to [Julian Andres Klode](https://launchpad.net/~juliank) for sponsoring the upload!
A lot of core changes have happened for the Cosmic Cuttlefish this far which may affect Lubuntu; far too many to list here. Thanks to everyone who has helped open up the archive this cycle!
## Infrastructure and Project Changes
### Lubuntu is switching to LXQt for 18.10
This is a huge change we have been planning for years, and we're finally doing it.
Simon Quigley, Lubuntu's Release Manager, broke the news on [the Ask Noah Show](http://podcast.asknoahshow.com/63) and Softpedia Linux [wrote an article](https://news.softpedia.com/news/lubuntu-is-finally-moving-to-lxqt-by-default-with-the-lubuntu-18-10-release-520951.shtml) the next day. We've received mixed feedback so far from the people we've talked to, so here's a quick FAQ:
**Q:** Why are you switching? **A:** This is for quite a few reasons, but here are the main ones:
* Upstream LXDE development has drastically slowed, and most if not all of the desktop is GTK 2, which is losing support and will eventually be phased out.
* LXQt development upstream is fairly active, and LXQt is based off of the Qt 5 framework, which has a tendency to be more stable than GTK (no dependency on GNOME).
**Q:** LXQt is not yet on 1.0; do you have concerns about stability? **A:** Upstream LXQt only hits 1.0 when it's Wayland-complete, and is not necessarily an accurate mark of stability. LXQt was marked as "stable" for the 0.11 release (arguably for the 0.10 release), and with steady progress on 0.13, we could reach 1.0 sooner than later.
**Q:** Lubuntu has been promising to switch for ages. Why has it taken this long? **A:** This was for two main reasons which have been resolved: lack of team resources, and the technology hasn't been in place quite yet. We don't want to switch close to an LTS release, because **we take users' stability very seriously**. LXDE has been rock solid and stable, and while it is potentially subject to bitrot, tends to work very well. So the ideal time to switch is right **after** the LTS so we have close to two years to iron things out before rolling it out to LTS users. We didn't decide to make the switch after the 16.04 LTS release because we were having some glaring issues, and team resources were scarce. Between that time and now, Lubuntu has also [changed Release Managers](https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/lubuntu-devel/2017-February/000968.html) and gained new members of the team. So, after evaluation both in person at LinuxFest NorthWest among part of the Lubuntu team, and online with the whole Lubuntu team shortly after the release, we decided this was the right time to jump.
**Q:** Will Lubuntu still be as light as it once was? **A:** Yes and no. Lubuntu, with this transition, is no longer what it originally was. As we use more modern technologies, Lubuntu will use more resources (which is inevitable). **However**, while we won't have the amount of granular minimalism that we once had, the statistics we have seen internally strongly suggest that users won't see much of an increase. Some people may have noticed that in the release announcement for 18.04, we bumped the system requirements to 1 GB of RAM at minimum (among other things); this wasn't because Lubuntu had actually gotten larger, it was because we hadn't updated those particular values in ten years. Yes, Lubuntu can probably run with less, but as we move forward, applications like web browsers can and will use more resources.
**Q:** I have Lubuntu running in production environments which need support of an LXDE Lubuntu (18.04 or 16.04) for longer than the length of the support cycle. Can I still get support? **A:** [Contact Simon Quigley](mailto:tsimonq2@lubuntu.me). We are absolutely open to working with you, and, in fact, we are in the process of setting up a more formal framework for this. More details to come.
**Q:** Lxqt? lxqt? LxQt? LXQT? What is it? **A:** It's LXQt. It used to be named LxQt, but it has since been renamed LXQt.
So far, to work towards this, we have [reworked the seeds](https://github.com/lubuntu-team/lubuntu-seeds/compare/99390b0315d02f368ba75275f107b83336fe1033...a91c70bc6fdf76aef5da04bc8bf9605267824955), [updated the metapackage](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lubuntu-meta/1.0), and made [a fix to our Calamares settings](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/calamares-settings-ubuntu/2) to fix the installer. Expect steady progress, and furthermore, [the daily ISOs](http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/daily-live/current/) use LXQt now.
# Roadmap
We don't have a Cosmic Cuttlefish release schedule yet at the time of writing, but when we do, you can find it [here](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CosmicCuttlefish/ReleaseSchedule). The **tentative** 18.10 release date is October 18, 2018.
Have an idea for what the next Lenny should look like? Let the Artwork Team know in the comments. :)

## Lubuntu 17.10 reaches End of Life on July 19, 2018
Following [the announcement](https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2018-July/000232.html) from [Adam Conrad](https://launchpad.net/~adconrad), we are announcing that Lubuntu 17.10 reaches End of Life on July 19, 2018. After July 19, **Lubuntu 17.10 will not receive any more fixes, including security patches**. If you are still running 17.10, you are **highly recommended to update to Lubuntu 18.04 as soon as possible**.
Want to know how to update? Take a look at [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhdQIzyscGw) that was made when 17.04 reached End of Life, which contains instructions which are still current.

* [nm-tray 0.4.0](https://github.com/palinek/nm-tray/releases/tag/0.4.0) has been [uploaded](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nm-tray/0.4.0-0ubuntu1) to Cosmic.
* [LXQt 0.13.0](https://twitter.com/LXQtOfficial/status/998744682288041984) has [landed](https://twitter.com/LubuntuOfficial/status/998744818493935616), soon after releasing.
* Our Calamares settings [have been fixed](https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/calamares-settings-ubuntu/3) to allow installation of UEFI systems and systems with no network access.
* General polish of the dailies.
As always, feedback is appreciated.
## Infrastructure and Project Changes
### Phabricator
We now mirror and host a variety of Git repositories on [our Phabricator instance](https://phab.lubuntu.me/), which is hosted by Altispeed Technologies.
To scale for this, we have adjusted our IRC notifications bot, [Lugito](https://phab.lubuntu.me/source/lugito/), to notify on new commits and new task comments. Thanks to [Konrad Krawiec](https://kkrawiec.me/) for helping with this!
The eventual goal is to move to a completely Launchpad and Phabricator development process, phasing out GitHub following its purchase by Microsoft. All Git repositories will eventually be completely accessible from Phabricator, with repositories hosted on Launchpad serving as a mirror.
### Commercial support for Lubuntu
As announced on [Episode 73 of the Ask Noah Show](http://podcast.asknoahshow.com/73), Lubuntu is working with Altispeed Technologies to provide commercial support for users and organizations who need more support than [our existing channels](https://lubuntu.me/links/) offer. More details will be provided in the future as the infrastructure for this is established.

## SouthEast LinuxFest
Simon Quigley was at [SouthEast LinuxFest](http://www.southeastlinuxfest.org/)! SELF was the weekend of June 8, 2018 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
You can find a large amount of pictures from the event [here](https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMJ2aduhHfmBoCDZQcyxihcWfx5-Nd1duaUgmNdmnwJa2M1bWWfin4TsCbhbX2Bmw?key=eXdhUjA1SlRzbVhpMkpCMGN1X3V4X0VqdERIZ2tR), which include some with Simon.
While we did not get a chance to reserve a booth, many productive conversations were had about Lubuntu and Ubuntu. [Aaron Honeycutt](https://ahoneybun.net/) from Kubuntu was at the event, as well as people from [the Trident project](http://project-trident.org/) working on Lumina, which is very similar to LXQt. In both cases, productive conversations were had about project collaboration in the future, and projects (mainly enhancements to LXQt) have been sparked on the Lubuntu side.
Lubuntu would like to thank Ubuntu for helping fund this trip for Simon. You can donate to the same funds which made this possible [here](https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/contribute) (while increasing the "Community" slider).

### Want to help?
One of the easiest ways to get involved with Lubuntu and help us make this release the best one yet is to test Lubuntu and report bugs.
You can learn how to write an excellent bug report that helps us solve your issue quicker by reading [this guide](https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html).
More information about testing on Lubuntu can be found [here](https://phab.lubuntu.me/w/testing/).
## Infrastructure and Project Changes
### Phabricator
We now take advantage of [the calendar](https://phab.lubuntu.me/calendar/) on our Phabricator instance.
### Translations
We now have [a Weblate instance](https://translate.lubuntu.me/projects/)!
Right now there are not many strings to translate, but as time goes on, we will add more.
Do you speak a language that isn't available to translate there? Let us know in the comments or [elsewhere](https://lubuntu.me/links/) and we will add that language.
Please note: if you are a registered user, you will be able to contribute translations with only one stop gap, but if you are contributing anonymously, there's quite a bit more work involved for us. So please do try and get an account there, so we can give you credit for your hard work. :)
Here are the translators who have contributed so far:
* Henrik Christiansen (Danish)
* Hans P. Möller (German, Spanish)
* Daniel Absmeier (German)
* Luís Rafael Gomes (Portuguese)
* Lucas A. V. Dantas (Portuguese (Brazil))
* Marcin Mikołajczak (Polish)
* Tony Cuesta Escobar (Catalan)
Thank you for your valuable contributions!
### State of i386 Images Going Forward
Lubuntu has, for the entirety of its lifetime, supported the i386 architecture (commonly referred to as 32-bit). But, as hardware is becoming newer, we are starting to have a hard time maintaining i386 going forward, as the machines are becoming rare. We understand that there is still interest for keeping the i386 images for Lubuntu, and thus, have not dropped it like the majority of other Ubuntu flavors have.
However, **when we stop receiving adequate testing on the ISO QA tracker for i386, especially before a milestone or release, we believe this indicates the end of user interest for supporting it**. As such, we will only continue to support these images if there is adequate testing for them, and they will no longer be a release blocker if the images are not tested (they will not be released in that case, and will not receive further releases).
So, if you have i386 machines that you are still using Lubuntu on, **please help us test, or the images will no longer be released**.
Furthermore, we will need help fixing i386-specific bugs should they arise. **If more than a few i386-specific bugs go unfixed as well, including any release-blocking bugs, the images will no longer be released.**
