I think there needs to be a system in place to keep this data safe so that future generations have the opportunity to see / hear the history. You know this would never happen to financial data. Banks and insurance companies have disaster recovery plans in place where they back up to multiple locations including bunkers so the data could be restored in a very short period of time.
