After launching qpdfview to open a pdf file use file -> open from the menu or press control +o as the keyboard shortcut. To change the view of the pdf to get closer there are a percentage of zoom as well as page width and page size. To see the full page of a pdf select page size and to select something where it shows.

The button with a magnifying glass with a + sign in the middle of it will cause the page to zoom in and the magnifying glass with a - sign in it will casue the view to zoom out.
qpdfview also includes some very useful docks. To view the outline dock go to the view menu -> docks -> and make sure the radio button outline is checked or press the keyboard shortcut f6 and it should appear on the left hand side of the pdf with collapsel sections having a + sign to expand them and - sign to collapse parts of the outline. This is extremely useful in large pdfs. By clicking on a section of the outline you can take qpdfview to the page you want to view.
